I've had the privilege of working with several colleges over the years, and this year, I collaborated with Brigham Young University-Idaho (BYUI) in Rexburg. Rooted in the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, BYUI has a distinct ethos. One unique aspect is their strict code of ethics, particularly regarding music. While most of the tracks I play at other college events wouldn't pass muster here, this challenge made the event even more memorable.
To ensure I adhered to their guidelines, I spent approximately 20 hours reviewing music and lyrics. Much of the popular radio music was off-limits due to explicit content, references to drugs, alcohol, or other themes not in line with the school's values. As a DJ, it's crucial for me to respect and follow my client's guidelines. For this event, I was trusted to provide three hours of clean, enjoyable music for the students, and I'm pleased to say it was a success. I'm looking forward to more shows with BYUI this year!
An added bonus of working with BYUI is their in-house Sound, Lighting, Staging, and Video production team. While the music preparation was intensive, once on-site, all I needed to do was enjoy the event and deliver a great experience.
The Production Team for this event elevated me above the dance floor it was my first time being above a crowd who is dance below me! It was fun to be above the crowd and gave me the ultimate opportunity to do crowd control and see exactly what was going on. I can't wait to work with BYUI in the future.
